Having narrowly won their previous match with just two balls to spare, Aston Rowant under 17’s travelled to Didcot on a sunny and warm Monday evening.

Aston Rowant won the toss and put themselves into bat with opening pair Will Hammersley and Ben Porter. From the start, the runs began to accumulate, particularly from Will. Not content with hitting sixes, he managed on a couple of occasions to get the ball over the very high safety netting supposedly protecting traffic on the adjoining road!

Ben was dismissed with the score on 46 and Eliot Hyman joined Will in a 57 run partnership. Skipper Caspar Mason was next at the crease which resulted in an 83 run partnership before Will was caught with the score on 186. He finished with 134 runs off 58 balls, including 14 fours and 8 sixes. Caspar kept the score moving, finishing with 37 runs, Aston Rowant ending up with 221 for 5 off their 20 overs.

We were lulled into thinking that the game was all but over (surely even Ben Stokes couldn’t cope with 11 runs an over?), but Didcot started their innings in a similar manner to Aston Rowant. Lucas Pugh scored freely in an opening partnership of 85 and despite being dropped a couple of times, eventually went on to score a very creditable 67. At times Didcot flirted with the required run rate, but Aston Rowant’s total began to look more distant as the match wore on and conditions got gloomier.

Aston Rowant eventually won with 46 runs to spare, Didcot finishing on 175 for 5 off 20 overs. All credit to Didcot for their innings and approach to the game. In total nearly 400 runs were scored off the 40 overs, not bad for a Monday evening!

Many thanks to Neil Hester for umpiring.
